Bend It Like Beckham

Alex G

Hi my name is Alex and I am eight years old. I think I first realised I loved kicking balls when I was 4 and took my first steps in my “Hart Walker”.

Pretty soon I was kicking balls into a goal set up in our house. Mum approached our local soccer club, Hornsby RSL Youth Soccer Club, and asked if I could join. I have been playing with them for 3 years.

It has been fantastic in so many ways!

The best feeling is when our team scores a goal, we are all so thrilled. Last year I scored 2 goals for our team. Being a part of a team sport is so much fun. You meet kids from other schools and travel to other areas to play your games.

Getting out of my wheelchair has also helped other kids in our area with special needs know that they can also join in local team sports and activities.

Our soccer club and local RSL club hold a big dinner “Kick a Goal for Kids” each year to raise money for children with Cerebral Palsy to participate in physical exercise.

I also have much stronger muscles in my legs after each season of soccer! It is the best feeling ever!

Hi Alex
Saw you in action this morning on TV - you make it all look so easy whilst having fun too. You are an inspiration to all youngsters to get out there and 'do' it. You sure are the difference. :-)

Alex, I still remember how you enjoyed balls in our conductive education classes a few years ago. I am excited for you that you have joined a soccer club. This is something I want to do, too. Now that I have read your story I will get my Mum to find a soccer club who will allow me to play despite my CP! Go, Alex, go!!!!

Hi Alex, I first met you when I was 2 years of age,and I came to see your house and all of your equipment.(You gave me your old bed and I still sleep in it today). Now I'm 5 and I have all that equipment too. I watched you kick soccer balls around your house and now I am attempting to kick a ball in my hart walker too.You are a true inspiration and maybe one day I can play on your soccer team!
