Danny's story
Danny Hingston
Danny began telling his story a number of years ago, in 2001, when a volunteer at Lifestyle Options asked him about his life. The volunteer said that talking with him was like learning a new language, but ever so slowly they worked on piecing together Danny’s substituted sounds and facial gestures to write his life story.
Danny ended that story almost nine years ago with the words “there are lots more things that I will need to say but I will get around to them all in good time.”
That “good time” has turned out to be 2009 for Cerebral Palsy week. Danny was asked if he would be interested in displaying his story to the clients, staff and guests at our CAS open day – and the smile on his face said it all. With the help of his lovely wife Flo, Danny was able to expand on his original story as no one knows him or his life better than she does. It is a bonus that she speaks “Danny’s language” perfectly which helped things along. She had lots of extra and sometimes juicy details to add and all involved spent time laughing and crying with them while talking about their memories and history. Speaking to Danny about the final product revealed that he was very emotional about bringing it all up again and nervous about putting it out there for everyone to see. However after the presentation he said he was glad that he had been brave enough to share his life story and that it was a lot easier with Flo there by his side. Danny ended with the same words – so I think it would be safe to say we can all look forward to the next instalment in his amazingly moving and inspiring story.
