Jess Irwin

Define the word “difference”:- something new which challenges what you and I already know, it might be positive, negative or even neutral. I am not the one to say “I make a difference to the world”, of course that would be too self absorbed!!! I often get people who look up to me, however some of these individuals are my biggest role models- they make the difference in my world!

To first introduce myself I would state, my name is Jess Irwin, I’m 21 and I am a photographer who simply wants to get the maximum out of life. Second to this, which is the thing you probably see at first glance, I have Cerebral Palsy which effects my fine motor movements and speech. I go where I want using an electric wheelchair, and express my thoughts and opinions using a LightWriter. Some might say that was a loosing hand to first be dealt, however I wouldn’t have met the wonderful people or experienced the things I have today if I hadn’t.

Challenges are what drive me to achieve the results I receive. I am like a dog with a bone when it comes to that. I won’t stop until I have succeeded. Whilst I was in yr 10 I was inspired by my mentor to pick up my first camera. Yes I was the new joke, how is she going to work a camera??? I used to daydream in Ken Duncan’s gallery at Erina Fair, the gallery staff must have thought I was a little odd because I just used to stare at Ken’s photos. I dreamt one day I would meet Ken and show him mine. Today I work for Ken Duncan. I still have many goals to concur!! Check out my website www.dare2bu.net.au to see what I have already done. I hope I have made a difference to those disabled children that are due to leave school that know of what I have achieved. If it only makes one of them more determined, then I have made a difference to someone else other than myself. I hope they make their dreams come true and do not listen to the bureaucrats in those meetings about post school options!!!

However what if I didn’t meet my mentor in year ten? If I didn’t pick up my first camera? What if Sue Werner from SEDS hadn’t come to my last post school option meeting with positive thoughts and answers? What if I let the doubters engulf me? Would I be the same person I am today? I think I would as a result of my strong adventurous personality that helps me succeed and I did have people that were willing to give me a go. I would like to take this opportunity to thank my family, friends, mentors, role models, SEDS, workmates and not to forget those bureaucrats that lit the flame inside in me. They positively impacted on my life so I could make a difference.
