Orangutan Adventure

Daniel Clarke

In late 2006, just after Steve Irwin passed away, our family watched a TV special hosted by Kim Watkins called 'Saving Orangutans'. In this show they highlighted that orangutans will become extinct in the wild in nine years. When the show was finished, I turned to my Mum and Dad and asked, 'Who will save the orangutans now that Steve Irwin is gone?'. Recently, an anonymous supporter of my quest organised for our family, including “my wheelchair”, to travel to the jungles of Borneo to see these beautiful creatures in the wild. The trip was treacherous! We spent 19 hours between planes and airports, 1 hour in a bus and 3 hours on boat going up a crocodile infested river in 38 degree heat and 100% humidity for 2 days, with a wheelchair in tow. But is was worth it! We visited an orangutan care centre. I was given a rare opportunity to nurse a baby orangutan only 4 months old. I think it made my Mum cry! We also had fun interacting with ‘teenaged’ orangutans! They sat on me, hugged me, kissed me, and just wanted to play with me. It was awesome! I met the Manager of the Orangutan Foundation International (OFI) Care Centre in Pangkalanbun, Borneo, and presented a cheque from the Australian Orangutan Project for A$25,000... My goal of saving the orangutan is still a 'work-in-progress', but with the support of my family and close friends I have proven that even a 12 year old boy with a disability can achieve a dream and I’m not limited by cerebral palsy.

What an inspiration! So many able-bodied people are so focused on their own problems and do nothing for anyone else, and here's a boy with many physical issues to overcome reaching out and doing so much for others. Well done Daniel, you are an amazing person!

Daniel Clarke and his family are AMAZING!! Daniels mission is a family one and together they shine! I had the honor of working alongside Daniel and his equally amazing younger brother William at a WSPA function earlier this year. His dedication and enthusiasm for the cause blew me away. We need more Daniels in this world and we need more Clarke families. This is a beautiful young man (with a wicked sense of humor)who decided to speak up and be counted as a person making a difference. Daniel you rock and THANK YOU for all you do for the animals!!

My husband and I where privileged to accompany Daniel and his family on the Borneo adventure. I had spoken to the family on several occasions but it is not until you meet this inspirational family that you truly know how wonderful they are. Daniel is an inspiration and I feel very humbled to be part of his quest to help save the orangutan. We spent many hours together and Daniels sense of humour is totally wicked. He has such a sharp wit and to him his disability is no disadvantage. His determination, inner strength and great compassion are his greatest strengths. Please keep up the great work Daniel!

Daniel Hi
well done. I was thinking back to when I was your age and I didn't have any focus or motivation to take on such an amazing project. Good on you. Remain aware of what it was within yourself that you tapped into to do this. You will then be able to access this inner strength when you need it again and again in life.
Awesome
Regards
Paul

Hello Daniel!

Yes, even in the U.K. we know of Steve Irwin - an amazing chap to watch and indeed to share his enthusiasm in his quest to preserve the World's Wildlife. As Carole (above) said, he would have been very proud of you, - as I'm sure your Family and Friends are. Will be forwarding your Dad's message to friends in the U.K here so that they can be aware of your enthusiasm and committment to this wonderfully worthwhile project! Good Luck!

Vince.

Hey Daniel, your Dad filled us in on your Orangutan quest way back at the beginning. It is fantastic to see that you not only took an interest in the plight of these beatiful animals when you first saw the programme, but that you went further than most of us do and decided you could make a real difference if you worked hard at learning everything about it and at bringing it to the attention of as many people as possible. Congratulations to you and all your family for your current success and continuing effort.

Daniel,
for my birthday instead of having nice presents I'm going to donate money to help save the orangatangs! I'm asking my friends and family to help and you have inspired me to do this. I really wanted some littlest pet shops but I'd much rather save real animals. I'll let you know how much we raise after October 23rd. Good luck!
